Breaker (Circuit Breaker)

An automatically-operated electrical switch that protects a circuit from damage caused by overcurrent.

A circuit breaker trips (opens) when current exceeds its rating, protecting downstream wiring and devices from overheating. Breakers replace fuses in modern panels and can be reset rather than replaced. Common sizes: 15A (general lighting), 20A (kitchen/bathroom outlets), 30–50A (large appliances, EV chargers). GFCI and AFCI breakers add ground-fault and arc-fault protection respectively. Required by NEC in specific locations.
