Rough-In

The phase of electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work installed before walls are closed.

Rough-in is the framing-stage installation of utilities — running wires, pipes, ducts — before drywall closes the walls. It's followed by inspection (rough inspection), then drywall, then "trim" or "finish" where fixtures, devices, and outlets are installed. Rough-in workflow is different from finish workflow: bigger crews, no final fixtures, dirty work. Most trades schedule rough-in and finish as separate jobs.
