Shingles

Overlapping roofing material — typically asphalt-based — that sheds water off a sloped roof.

Asphalt shingles are the dominant roofing material in U.S. residential construction. Architectural (laminated) shingles last 25–30 years; 3-tab shingles 15–20 years. Installation involves underlayment, drip edge, starter course, field shingles, hip/ridge, and flashing details. Manufacturer warranties (Owens Corning, GAF, CertainTeed) require certified installers and specific underlayment/ventilation. Roofing system is one of the highest-risk warranty areas — proper photo documentation at install pays off for decades.
