RFI (Request for Information)

A formal request from a contractor to a designer or owner asking for clarification on plans or specifications.

An RFI is the standard mechanism by which a contractor asks the design team (architect, engineer) to clarify an ambiguity in the construction documents. RFIs are tracked, numbered, and responded to in writing. Heavy RFI volume is a red flag for incomplete drawings. RFIs are core to commercial construction workflow; residential remodels typically handle them informally.
