Change Order

A written modification to the original contract scope, price, or schedule, signed by both parties.

A change order documents that the scope of work has changed after contract signing — additional work, deleted work, substituted materials, or a schedule extension. The change order specifies the cost impact and the schedule impact, and requires customer signature before the work proceeds. Verbal change orders that never become written are one of the most common causes of payment disputes in residential remodeling.
