Submittal

A document, sample, or shop drawing submitted to the design team for approval before installation.

Submittals are the formal mechanism by which contractors get design-team approval for specific products, finishes, or assemblies before they're installed. Common submittals: shop drawings for steel or millwork, material samples for finishes, manufacturer data sheets for equipment. The design team reviews and stamps the submittal "Approved," "Approved as Noted," or "Revise and Resubmit." Heavy in commercial work; lighter in residential.
